It’s What’s on the Inside that Counts

My Mother insists that one of my first words was “why”. Personally I think it was “chocolate”, but we’ll just let her have her memories. I love learning about new things, and personally feel like the best way to learn and understand something is to see it with your own eyes. One of the most educational and unique learning experiences I’ve ever had was  Gunther von Hagens’ Bodyworlds exhibit. I saw my first exhibition in San Francisco, CA and was later able to view different installment in Philadelphia, PA.

We live in our bodies every single day, but never have we seen them quite like this.  The exhibitions, created with health education in mind, use a very unique process called plastination to preserve donated bodies.  The bodies are then often posed or presented  in a “layer by layer” form to highlight different organs or systems of the body.  Originally an idea conceived by an anatomy assistant who got the inspiration from watching a deli slicer cutting a ham, (ewww, right???) Body Worlds is so unique and amazing that you truly have to see it to believe it.

From the minute you enter the exhibit, you are completely intriqued by what you see.  After a few minutes of getting over the possible “ick” factor  of being surrounded by once-living, now plastinized human beings, you are truly able to see the bigger picture and instantly gain a whole new appreciation for your own body and it’s many wonders.

One of the controversial, yet amazing exhibitions is showing exclusively at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA, beginning October 17th. It is a very limited engagement and it is highly recommended that you purchase your tickets early to make sure you get an opportunity to experience it for yourself.  Ticket surcharge fees are waived if  you  purchase tickets before August 20th.

…maybe I’ll see you there!

Here is a peek at some of Gunther von Hagen’s inspired work.

‘Tis the Season

Sack 'em this season with your football knowledge.

Sack 'em this season with your football knowledge.

The time is upon us for many of us to lose our husbands, boyfriends, or friends to the seduction of the NFL.  As a wife of a hubby who, let’s just say, may be interested in football, it has become clear to me that Sundays are now “football” days, errr… wait and Saturdays…and some Thursdays, and also Mondays…so what’s a girl to do?  I say, if you can’t beat’ em (and you won’t) join ‘em!

First off, it’s important to learn a bit about the game.   There is a lot of information out there, so why not start at the source? Try the NFL rulebook where you will find not only the rules of the game, but also a great beginner’s guide to the game and a listing of the official signals. Try not to giggle as you click through the black and white drawings of the signals…I dare you.

Ok, so you got the basics, but let’s be real. Over-sized jerseys are not what I want to be wearing on game days. Sure, some teams make really cute pink versions or more fitted T’ees, but for something a little more unique, check out Touch by Alyssa Milano .  She has created a really fun and girly line of NFL, NBA, MLB, UHL, NCA apparel so you can cheer on your favorite team and still be cute as a button!  Those cheerleaders will have nuthin’ on you!

Movie mapping made easy

When I tell people that the first time I ever saw the movie E.T. was a few months ago, they look at me like I just told them the saddest thing they had ever heard…they extend their hands to me to offer some sort of condolence, as to try and make up for my bleak, “phone-home-free” childhood.  But, visiting Universal Studios and experiencing the E.T. ride inspired me to see the classics that I never had a chance to enjoy.

I found a really cool site called liveplasma that allows you to take your favorite movie and insert it into a unique search that “maps” you several other suggestions that you may love!  So let’s just say your favorite movie is…um, well Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.  Hey, don’t judge me, people, I already told you I was fragile because of the whole E.T. thing.   Anyway, you type in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and you’re given a mapping of other movies to try.  (think six degrees of separation) Low and behold, another one of my favorites appears…The Addams Family.

Jaws was a classic...

Jaws was a classic...

This is a great tool for music too.  Love MJ?  Try Prince. Love Black eyed Peas? Try Sophie Ellis Bexter.  Make sure to register, it’s free and you can keep your mappings for later viewing.  See an artist you like in one of your current mappings? Click on that artist to expand a new map of music similar to theirs. You can even send your mapping to a friend if you think they might enjoy your results. I can’t wait to add some of my new movie findings to my netflix list…now if I would could remember to send back the movies I already have…
